Public invited to first board meeting with School District 83’s official trustee

SALMON ARM – The North Okanagan-Shuswap School District’s new official trustee is getting down to business.

Mike McKay, who was appointed by the province to take over after School District 83’s board of education was fired, will hold his first public board meeting July 5.

“The agenda for that meeting will be posted on the district website and will include receipt of the special advisor’s report and other emerging issues to be addressed,” he says in a release.

McKay will serve as a one-man board for at least the next year, and possibly until the next provincial election. His appointment comes at a time when the school district has been dealing with mounting community concern over the transfer of $10.5 million from the operating budget.

“I am working with senior staff to review a wide range of issues including transparency, resourcing levels, home-school connections, governance routines and many more. These areas, some of which were included in the special advisor’s report, will help us to identify priorities toward achieving our goals,” McKay says.

The meeting will be held at the District Education Centre in Salmon Arm Tuesday, July 5, at 4 p.m.
