Salmon Arm shop class accident reviewed by WorkSafe B.C.

SALMON ARM – A Salmon Arm high school student who suffered a serious hand injury in shop class is back home and a safety investigation complete.

School District 83 spokesperson Alice Hucul says the Grade 9 girl is officially out of the hospital after getting airlifted from Salmon Arm Secondary School June 14. She was rushed to Kelowna General Hospital for treatment of a serious hand injury sustained while using a piece of equipment at the Jackson Campus during shop class. 

WorkSafe B.C. investigated the accident and observed no safety violations.

In his report, inspection officer Mark Harper says the student injured herself while using an eight-inch jointer during woodworking class.

“During the course of my investigation there were no observed or determined violations,” Harper said.

He said the jointer was locked-out and the scene was secured when he arrived. No compliance orders were issued.

“I provided contact information for this employer to obtain critical incident support services for personnel (and) staff involved with this incident…,” Harper said.

The school district is still required to conduct a formal incident investigation and provide a copy of that report to WorkSafe.
