Montreal dance troupe LaLaLa Human Steps shuts down after 35 years

MONTREAL – Montreal contemporary dance troupe La La La Human Steps is shutting down after 35 years in existence.

In a statement published on the company’s website, founder and artistic director Edouard Lock announced the immediate end to activities.

He says the last tour put on by the troupe was difficult financially.

Lock says creditors have been generous with the company’s debts, but the cuts that followed and a decision not to guarantee more than the current year of subsidy spelled the end of the company.

The company was founded in June 1980 in Montreal and achieved success on the international scene, performing in 275 theatres all over the world.

Dozens of artists from a variety of backgrounds collaborated with the company during its 30 years.

Well-known Canadian contemporary dancer Louise Lecavalier worked for many years with the group, which also collaborated with the likes of David Bowie and Frank Zappa.

“It’s time to say goodbye and to give thanks,” Lock said.
