Chicago police now say a 25-year-old man suspected of fatally shooting a 66-year-old man who went to the aid of his niece in their home was an invited guest.
Authorities initially said the man entered a South Side home through a window late Thursday, tied up the 17-year-old girl in her bedroom and assaulted her.
Later Friday, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the 25-year-old, who is in custody, was invited to the house by the alleged victim. Police say her uncle came to her aid when he heard her screams and was shot in the back and the head. He died at a hospital and the girl was hospitalized.
The suspect’s name has not been released. Police say he was captured as he ran from the scene.
