Suspect in McGill Road standoff facing attempted murder charge

KAMLOOPS – A suspect involved in a weekend standoff near Thompson Rivers University is set to appear in Kamloops Provincial Court this morning facing three charges including attempted murder with a weapon.

Derek Muirhead is in custody and will appear for a bail hearing today, June 27.

A gun was discharged on McGill Road on Saturday, June 25, near the TRU campus. Muirhead is one of two people arrested in the incident.

The two men were seen fighting outside an apartment building in the 700-block of McGill Road around 11:20 a.m., Saturday, June 25. In a release, Sgt. Lorne Wood said witnesses told RCMP one of the men produced a handgun and fired it.

Kamloops RCMP evacuated the building after finding one suspect, and kept people back while they negotiated with a second man inside. The standoff ended and residents were allowed home by 7:25 p.m. Saturday.
