Dive team on site of possible Lake Country drowning

LAKE COUNTRY – A search of Lake Okanagan resumed this morning after a woman did not resurface when her canoe tipped over Sunday evening.

A man and a woman were canoeing near the 9300-block of Okanagan Centre Road in Lake Country around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 26. The pair were roughly 100 feet off shore when the canoe tipped, spilling both occupants into the water.

A witness told police neither of the occupants were wearing life jackets and only the man resurfaced. A media release from RCMP Const. Kelly Brett describes the man as ‘older’. 

Kelowna RCMP and members of fire services searched the area for the 57-year-old woman until nightfall and returned Monday morning. An RCMP dive team is currently on site and the search remains active.

“The capsizing appears to be a tragic accident and no foul play is suspected at this time,” Brett says. “Kelowna RCMP is reminding residents and tourists to always practice boat safety by wearing life jackets at all times when on the water.”
