Driver arrested after hit and run with Kelowna cyclist

A cyclist in Kelowna is expected to recover after she was hit by a vehicle on KLO Road on Thursday.

The driver, however, is facing criminal charges for leaving the scene, according to Kelowna RCMP.

Police were called Sept. 1 after the cyclist was hit at the intersection of KLO Road and De Montreuil Court.

Passing drivers stopped to help her until paramedics got to the scene. After paramedics and firefighters arrived on the scene, the cyclist was taken to Kelowna General Hospital.

Witness accounts and dashcam footage helped police identify the suspect, who was later arrested, according to the release.

“Without the witnesses stopping to help and providing the RCMP with important information, this investigation and arrest of the driver could not have happened so quickly," Const. Mike Della-Paolera of Kelowna RCMP said in the release.

Police did not say which direction either the driver or the cyclist were travelling. The release also did not say whether she was crossing the street at the De Montreuil Court intersection.

Police continue to investigate and future charges may be laid. For now, the driver was charged with failing to stop after an accident, according to police.
