Robert Askins’ play ‘Hand to God’ to depart Broadway and attack London’s West End

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Tony Award-nominated play “Hand to God” — featuring a satanic hand puppet — will close on Broadway in January but will be resurrected a month later — in London.

Producer Kevin McCollum said Wednesday the show will end its New York run on Jan. 3 and begin a new chapter Feb. 5 at the Vaudeville Theatre in the West End under original director Moritz von Stuelpnagel. The cast will be announced later.

Playwright Robert Askins’ bracing comedy, mixes violence, swearing, brutal honesty, parental failure, church hypocrisy, and plenty of sex — of both human and puppet varieties.

Set in a current-day Texas church basement, it’s got three teens and two adults who over the course of a few days struggle with society’s expectations and religious precepts.

The Broadway cast is made up of Steven Boyer, Michael Oberholtzer and Sarah Stiles as the three teens, and Geneva Carr, who portrays Boyer’s character’s mom, and the gravelly voiced Marc Kudisch as a righteous church pastor.
