Spike in abandoned campfires in Kamloops Fire Centre on long weekend

KAMLOOPS – Vacationers in the region's campgrounds need to check their fires before leaving.

With 22 abandoned camp fires found in the Kamloops Fire Centre, fire information officer Rachel Witt says wardens saw a spike in left over hot spots.

“It’s quite a high number compared to other weekends,” she says.

Last year during the weekend closest to Canada Day, only 15 abandoned campfires were found. Because it was a long weekend Witt says more wardens than usual were sent out to keep an eye on fires.

The weekend only saw two small wildfires in the region, one near Lillooet and one near Penticton, were both suspected to be human caused.
