Bald tires cause Coq crash

KAMLOOPS – Heavy rains created the conditions for the driver of a Ford Mustang to hydroplane on the highway, causing a crash that sent three people to hospital Thursday evening.

Staff Sgt. Doug Aird says a 2011 Ford Mustang was driving in the northbound slow lane near the Inks Lake turn on the Coquihalla Highway. He was being passed by a truck the Mustang began to hydroplane and struck the passenger side of the truck. The truck then spun out, entered the ditch and rolled.

A registered nurse from Alberta came on the scene and helped tend to all of the injured parties. The father and his two young sons were taken to hospital with minor shoulder injuries, sore hips and bumps to the head. The occupants of the Mustang were not injured.

Police determined the rear tires of the Mustang were ‘inadequate’ and a ticket was issued to the driver for having tires with a tread depth of less than 1.5 millimetres. 

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Kamloops just after 5 p.m. and within 10 minutes a system hit the city hard with heavy rain, strong winds and lightning. While the rain continued off and on for a couple of hours the warning was downgraded to a watch by 6 p.m. and was completely removed just before 9 p.m.
