Lumby Outhouse Race is back for number two

Usually people race towards an outhouse — but in Lumby, the outhouses do the racing.

The second annual Lumby Outhouse Race is happening later this month in the North Okanagan community, and anyone over 18 is eligible to enter their crapper.

“The Monashee Trail Society was looking to do a fundraiser,” society director Darren Schmidt said. “Something in the winter to break up the dull days of the winter.”

Schmidt said the society noticed communities in America’s midwestern states were hosting similar outhouse events.

“We didn’t see anyone doing it in B.C. and thought it would make for a fun, family event.”

After constructing their own outhouses prior to the event, participants will all compete in a series round-robin races, with the fastest teams advancing to an elimination round.

Although there are prizes to be won for fastest and best decorated, the races are not extremely competitive.

“It’s more about the fun and creativity,” Schmidt said.

Teams will consist of four people and a three-sided outhouse on skis. One teammate will be sitting on the pot while the other three push.

The cost to enter is team per $50. The event is happening Jan. 22 at noon. Racers are asked to arrive at the west Salmon Trail parking lot 30 minutes early for check-in.
