B.C. nurse caught sleeping on the job gets suspended

A Richmond nurse has been suspended for two months for sleeping on the job.

According to a Jan. 19 B.C. College of Nurses and Midwives decision, Ivan George Dacanay was found sleeping during a shift in July 2021.

On top of Dacanay's napping, the licenced practical nurse also failed to administer medications on time, failed to follow policies after a resident fell and spoke in an "aggressive and disrespectful manner" to a colleague while he was in a leadership role.

The nursing regulator said he also failed to "appropriately assess" a resident who removed their urinary catheter when there was potential for urethral trauma and pain or discomfort due to urinary retention.

Dacanay signed a consent agreement admitted to his actions.

Along with a two-month suspension, he also has a limitation making sure he's not the only member of staff on duty and has been barred from supervising students and new staff, and can no longer work nights.

He will also have to take courses in ethics, professional communication, documentation and medication administration, and develop a learning plan with his employer.

It's unclear if Dacanay is still registered as the decision referred to him as a "former licenced practical nurse."
