The Latest: Officials suspend search for missing UNR athlete

RENO, Nev. – The Latest on a paddle boarder who went missing in Lake Tahoe (all times local):

5:15 p.m.

Authorities are suspending the search today for a University of Nevada, Reno football player who went missing in Lake Tahoe while paddle boarding.

KOLO-TV reports (http://bit.ly/28tkMLE ) that the Placer County Sheriff’s Office says it has exhausted all its options today in the search for 20-year-old Mark Ma, who went missing Friday.

The sheriff’s office told the station they are waiting for special search teams that use sonar, which could take two or three days.

According to a news release, Ma was on a paddle board trip with several football players Friday afternoon.

The group was paddle boarding off Lake Tahoe’s west shore when they encountered strong winds.

Ma’s board was found adrift.

Ma, who is from Honolulu, Hawaii, is listed on the Nevada Wolf Pack website as a sophomore who plays defensive end.

Authorities have identified a paddle boarder who went missing in Lake Tahoe as a University of Nevada, Reno football player.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office says the search was ongoing Saturday for Marc Ma.

According to a news release, Ma was on a paddle board trip with several football players Friday afternoon.

The group was paddle boarding off Lake Tahoe’s west shore when they encountered strong winds.

Ma’s board was found adrift.

Ma, who is from Honolulu, Hawaii, is listed on the Nevada Wolf Pack website as a sophomore who plays defensive end.

2:50 p.m.

Firefighters and rescue personnel are resuming the search for a paddle boarder who went missing in Lake Tahoe.

North Tahoe Fire Protection District officials say crews were called shortly before 3:30 p.m. Friday to Obexer’s Marina West Shore, about 700 yards off shore.

North Tahoe Fire spokesman Ron Carson says other paddle boarders had turned back toward shore because of high winds and noticed one person was missing.

The paddle boarder’s name has not been released but he is described as a 21-year-old man.

Several agencies including the U.S. Coast Guard are assisting in the search.

Helicopters from CalStar and the Navy are conducting air searches.

Yesterday’s search had to be called off at 6 p.m.
