RCMP safely detonate explosive device safely near Kelowna restaurant

RCMP detonated an explosive device found near a Wendy's restaurant in Kelowna last night and reopened Highway 97 after the busy route was closed for hours.

The stretch of Harvey Avenue was closed in both directions between Spall and Cooper Roads for more than seven hours on Monday, Feb. 27.

Police say a suspicious package was spotted around noon and the highway, which runs past the Orchard Park mall, restaurant and businesses was closed as a precaution.

A bomb disposal unit was sent from Vancouver to assist and it arrived around 6 p.m. The explosive device was detonated about an hour later.

More information from RCMP is expected later today as investigators try to determine who planted the explosive and what the motive might have been.
