Recovering from double lung transplant will leave Kelowna mom with big bills

A Kelowna woman in need of a double lung transplant is going to need help as she spends months in recovery.

Tawnee Brunet needs the transplant because she is living with lymphangioleiomyomatosis.

Since last year, she’s been out of work due to her health. She relies on oxygen and is unable to chase around her four-year-old son.

“Bowling is one activity we can still do because it doesn’t require much effort,” Brunet said.

“We play with puzzles and games and with balls, but I’m very limited in what I can do. And it’s hard for him to understand that.”

Catching her breath is especially difficult in the winter.

Shortly after the onset of the disease it was determined Brunet would need a double lung transplant. She will be going to Vancouver next month to meet with a specialist.

“As long as I have all my ducks in a row, prove I have the financial means to live in Vancouver three to six months post surgery, I’ll be put on a transplant list and then it’s just a waiting game.”

After the surgery, Brunet will be required to stay near the hospital for such a long period of time to ensure her body doesn’t reject the transplant. Her partner, son and their dog will be staying in the Okanagan while she recovers. She’ll need to cover the cost of accommodations, living expenses and a full-time caretaker.
