Four Canadians on World Anti-Doping Agency’s list of banned support staff

MONTREAL – Four Canadians have been included on an international World Anti-Doping Agency list of support personnel who are banned from working with athletes because of doping violations.

The four Canadians have all previously been sanctioned by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport, but WADA released a global list Monday of 114 people under a “Prohibited Association” rule that is a new feature of its 2015 code.

Athletes are not allowed to work with support staff currently sanctioned, or who have been sanctioned in the last six years, for an anti-doping violation.

The CCES banned cycling coach Andre Aubut and Dr. Maurice Duquette for life in 2009 — Aubut for administering erythropoetin (EPO) to cyclist Genevieve Jeanson and Duquette for assisting and aiding Aubut to do so.

The CCES handed conditioning coach Valerio Moscariello a 12-year suspension in 2010 for administering steroids to a boxer.

Moscariello said then he had mistakenly injected national-team boxer Amanda Galle with a steroid that he used personally. Galle received a two-year suspension.

Trainer Jimmy Gariepy is serving a five-year suspension dating back to 2012, when the CCES sanctioned him for administering a diuretic to a 16-year-old female athlete. That athlete also received a two-year suspension.
