Former Saskatchewan Roughriders star Stanley Williams dies at age 85

REGINA – Former Saskatchewan Roughriders star Stanley Williams, a standout player on both sides of the ball for the CFL team in the 1950s, has died. He was 85.

Williams died last Sunday in Waco, Tex., the team said Tuesday in a news release. There was no immediate word on the cause of death.

Williams joined the Roughriders in 1953 after four seasons at Baylor University.

The speedy defensive back played five seasons in Saskatchewan and was named to the 1954 Western all-star team as an offensive end.

Williams was inducted into the team’s Plaza of Honour in 1996. Funeral arrangements were pending.
