Montreal’s Francoise Abanda retires from Coupe Banque National with neck injury

QUEBEC CITY, Que. – Montreal’s Francoise Abanda retired with a neck injury against second seed Mirjana Lucic-Baroni of Croatia for a 6-3, 3-1 loss on Tuesday at the Coupe Banque National.

Fourth seed Lucie Hradecka beat Croatia’s Donna Vekic 6-2, 6-4, in the other evening match.

Earlier, France’s Amandine Hesse topped Argentina’s Maria Irigoyen 6-3, 6-2. Meanwhile, Poland’s Paula Kania dominated eighth seed Belgium’s An-Sophie Mestach, winning 6-4, 6-3.

American Alexa Glatch upset sixth seed Tatjana Maria of Germany with a score of 1-6, 6-4 and 6-1.

Qualifier Jessica Pegula surprised fellow American Nicole Gibbs, defeating her 1-6, 7-6, 7-6. Russia’s Evgeniya Rodina came away with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over American Sachia Vickery. Qualifier Samantha Crawford, also from the United States, advanced to the second round with a victory over qualifier Mandy Minella, from Luxembourg, 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles, Canadian duo Sharon Fichman and Carol Zhao lost to Germany’s Tatjana Maria and Anna Tatishvili from the United States 6-2, 6-4. Maria Irigoyen and Paula Kania lost to Americans Julia Boserup and Nicole Gibbs 6-4, 6-4.
