Ayad Akhtar’s ‘Disgraced’ becomes nation’s most produced theatre work this season

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Ayad Akhtar’s “Disgraced” will be the most-produced play nationwide in the coming 2015-16 season, according to the theatre industry’s largest trade group.

American Theatre magazine, published by Theatre Communications Group, announced the list in its October issue. It omits holiday-themed shows and Shakespeare works.

“Disgraced” will have 18 productions, “Peter and the Starcatcher” will have 16, “Outside Mullingar” will have 11, “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “Buyer & Cellar” will have nine each. Last year’s top play, “Vanya and Sonia and Mash and Spike” will have eight.

The list was compiled from some 400 member theatres.

The Tony Award-nominated “Disgraced” is a blistering play about a dinner party that spirals into a shouting match about race, Islam and culture.
