People trapped by flooding get saved by Vernon Search and Rescue

Flooding caused two individuals to get stuck up the Whiteman Creek forest service road outside of Vernon, and getting them to safety was a tricky task for the rescuers.

Members of Vernon Search and Rescue began their assignment at 5 p.m. on May 11, according to a Facebook update from the team.

“Our crews responded to the area and teams on ATVs were deployed, the subjects were located quickly but were separated from our team by the swiftly moving creek,” the update says.

“A team was sent on foot to find a safe route across the creek and around a number of potentially dangerous terrain features.”

A safe route was found and rescuers were able to reach the stranded folks and provide them with food and water before guiding them through “very steep” terrain.

Then they were given a quick assessment and a ride back to town. The rescue was completed around 1:30 a.m.

B.C.’s Ministry of Natural Resources says the Whiteman Creek forest service road was closed as of May 5.
