Crews on scene for wildfire near Sun Peaks

BC Wildfire Service has eight firefighters at the scene of a new fire near Sun Peaks this afternoon.

The wildfire just east of Whitecroft reached 0.8 hectares in size by at around 3:30 p.m. today, May 19. It was discovered around 1:30 p.m.

Fire information officer Melanie Bibeau said they sent eight members of a ground crew to the scene. No helicopters are planned to help fight the fire at this time.

She said the fire isn't currently threatening any structures.

Bibeau said crews are on their way to another fire between Malakwa and Eagle River Provincial Park.

The spot-sized fire was discovered earlier this afternoon, around 1:40 p.m., along the Griffin Forest Service Road.

While small, both fires are currently out of control.

The fire near Sun Peaks is suspected to be human-caused, while the fire near Malakwa is believed to be caused by lightning.
