Vernon RCMP is stepping up backcountry enforcement this weekend

Vernon cops plan to rule the backcountry with an iron fist this long weekend.

An “enhanced seasonal policing initiative” is being conducted, according to the a release from the Vernon RCMP.

Their patrols in the back-country are happening in partnership with Recreation Sites and Trails BC. Officers will be offering education and enforcing any broken rules at provincial rec sites.

“The North Okanagan is home to some great back country areas,” Sgt. Justin Thiessen said in the release.

“We want everyone to take advantage of what this beautiful area has to offer. Our goal is to ensure that everyone is using these areas in a safe and responsible manner.”

Officers will also be enforcing against impaired driving, making sure off-road vehicles are in compliance with the law, and that camping and campfire are being done responsibly.

“Police want to remind residents that intoxicating substances and off-road vehicles do not mix,” substances said. “Impaired operation of off-road vehicles is as dangerous and can have fatal consequences. It also carries the same punishments under the Criminal Code. Whether it’s dirtbikes, ATV’s, or watercraft, if you’re going to drink or consume intoxicating substances, please make the responsible decision and do not drive.”

The Vernon RCMP wants the public to report unsafe behaviour and to also have an enjoyable Victoria Day long weekend.
