RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Authorities say the body of an 8-year-old girl has been recovered hours after she was swept away while swimming in an Arkansas stream.
The Pope County Sheriff’s Office says she was found shortly after 10 a.m. Monday in the Illinois Bayou, about 87 miles (140 kilometres) northwest of Little Rock.
Deputies say the girl disappeared about 8:45 p.m. Sunday when she was swept downstream while swimming in the stream, which is a popular whitewater kayaking, rafting and canoeing destination.
Rescue teams searched for the girl until about 2:30 a.m. Monday and resumed the search at about 8:30 a.m. The victim’s body was located by divers. Authorities have not released her name.
