NFL-SCHEDULE

Week 2 of NFL play

UNDATED (AP) — Among the early afternoon, early season matchups today in the NFL the Bills are hosting the Patriots. Each team won its opening game last week. In an NFC East matchup the Eagles are home to the Cowboys. Dallas won its opener last week while the Eagles lost theirs. The game features De Marco Murray of the Eagles lining up against his former teammates. He was the NFL Offensive Player of the Year last season with Dallas.

And in Cleveland Johnny Manziel (man-ZEHL’) once again will attempt to prove his worth as he quarterbacks the Browns against the Titans. Rookie Marcus Mariota (mar-ee-OH’-tah), a former Heisman Trophy winner like Manziel, starts for Tennessee. In his first pro game last week he tossed for four scores.

Your other day games feature the NFC South rival Bucs at New Orleans, Minnesota home to the Lions, Arizona playing at Chicago, the Panthers home to the Texans, the Niners at Pittsburgh, the Bengals home to the Chargers, Atlanta in New York against the Giants, the Redskins entertaining the Rams, Baltimore at Oakland and the Jags home to the Dolphins.

The evening game is being played in Green Bay as the Packers entertain Seattle. The last time they met was in the NFC championship game last January and Seattle won in overtime 28-25. In that game the Packers blew a 16-0 halftime lead.

Keep an eye on Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers as he has not thrown an interception at home in 418 passes. That dates back to Dec. 2, 2012.

Seattle QB Russell Wilson has had great success against Green Bay, going 3-0, including the playoffs.

MLB-SCHEDULE

Races continue to heat up

UNDATED (AP) — The closest race in baseball is in the American League West, where the Rangers top the Astros by 2 1/2 games. This afternoon Texas is home to Seattle while the Astros are home to Oakland.

The next closest race is the National League Central, where all of a sudden the Cardinals’ lead is just four games over the Pirates and five over the Cubs. Today the Cards are once again in Chicago facing the Cubs while the Pirates are in LA meeting the Dodgers.

The evening game is being played in New York with the Mets playing host to the Yankees. This is the third of three games this weekend for the two teams, who split the opening two. In the American League East the Yankees start the day 3 1/2 games back of the Blue Jays while the Mets have a seven-game lead over the Nationals in the NL East.

This afternoon the Jays are hosting the Red Sox while the Nationals are home to Miami.

F1-SINGAPORE GP

Vettel wins pole

SINGAPORE (AP) — Sebastian Vettel drove his Ferrari to victory today in the Singapore Grand Prix. The win is Vettel’s third of the season and 42nd of his career. He now ranks third all-time in Formula One victories. Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo (rih-KAR’-doh) was second behind his former teammate.

Reigning world champ and current leader in the driver standings Lewis Hamilton failed to finish the race.

In the standings Hamilton is in first by just 41 points over Mercedes teammate Nico (NEE’-koh) Rosberg with Vettel eight back of Rosberg.

NASCAR

The Chase begins

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — Rain washed out qualifying for today’s Spring Cup race at Chicagoland Speedway in Jolie, Illinois. This is the first race in the Chase for the championship and 16 drivers are in the running for the top prize.

The pole sitter, based on having the best practice speed, is Kevin Harvick.

Day in driver’s seat

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Jason Day has the lead after three rounds of the BMW Championship. He’ll start play today at 20 under par, six shots in front of Scott Piercy and Daniel Berger.

Rickie Fowler had the best round of the day yesterday, a 5-under 66 to stand 12-under.

GOLF-SOLHEIM CUP

Americans roar back for win

ST. LEON-ROT, Germany (AP) — After being infuriated by a call they found unsportsmanlike, the Americans staged the biggest comeback in Solheim Cup history to win the trophy back from Europe. Paula Creamer (KREE’-mur) defeated Germany’s Sandra Gal to complete the turnaround and secure a 14 1/2-13 1/2 victory for the United States, which had trailed by four points going into the singles.

The match turned after American rookie Alison Lee was penalized for picking up the ball when she thought her putt was conceded in the morning fourballs, which had been suspended on Saturday. The 20-year-old missed a birdie putt on the 17th hole and then picked up the ball as Europe’s Charley Hull was already walking toward the last hole – only for Suzann Pettersen (PEHT’-ur-suhn) to claim Europe hadn’t conceded the short putt. The umpire intervened and Europe was awarded the hole and eventually won the match.
