Heat alerts issued throughout Interior with temperatures forecast to reach high 30s this week

Heat alerts are in effect throughout the Southern Interior.

A heat warning has been issued in the South Thompson and southern Fraser Canyon, including Lytton, by Environment Canada. Temperatures are expected to reach up to 38 degrees Celsius between today, Aug, 13, and Thursday, Aug. 17.

“A strong ridge of high pressure will bring rising temperatures to the southern interior,” the warning says. “Well above seasonal daytime temperatures combined with elevated overnight temperatures will mean little relief from the heat. Temperatures are expected to return to more seasonal values by Friday.”

Environment Canada has also issued special weather statements for the Okanagan, North Fraser Canyon, Nicola, Similkameen, Boundary and West Kootenay, where daytime highs are expected to reach 37 C this week.

“Well above seasonal daytime temperatures are forecast,” the special weather statement says. “However, nighttime temperatures over these regions may cool to the mid teens for some relief of the heat.”

In Kamloops, the City will be keeping the concourse open at Sandman Centre from noon until 8 p.m. for residents who want some relief from the heat.

Interior Health issued a release to say no extreme heat emergencies have been declared, but reminded the public to keep cool and stay hydrated.
