Kelowna mayor issues food bank challenge on Facebook

KELOWNA – A year after the ice bucket challenge went viral and raised millions for ALS research the mayor of Kelowna is trying to start something similar to help raise money for the Central Okanagan Food Banks.

In a video released to Facebook today, July 18, Mayor Colin Basran stands in front of the Kelowna Community Food Bank with a bucket held over his head. The bucket is empty but in his hand is a bag of groceries.

“This is the one bag challenge,” he says. “I’m going to challenge five people to come down to the food bank and they have 48 hours to either drop off one bag of food or visit the Central Okanagan Food Bank website and make a small donation.”

Basran then asks those five people post a picture or video showing them with their donation and challenging five of their friends to do the same.

His nominees are former councilor Andre Blanleil, councilor Maxine DeHart, Renee Merrifield Wasylyk, Darryl Reuter and Roz Huber.

“You have 48 hours,” he says.

To make a donation to the food bank visit the Central Okanagan Community Food Bank website.
