BOGOTA – Gunmen killed two Colombian police officers Monday at a border bridge that connects the country with Venezuela, authorities said.
Police said the two armed men were walking along the river that divides Colombia and Venezuela and approached a customs and migration post at the Jose Antonio Paez International Bridge. The suspects then fired at the two officers on duty, police said.
Officials said 26-year-old Jeison Bejarano and 28-year-old Oscar Gonzalez were killed.
Arauca state Gov. Ricardo Alvarado said authorities had not determined who was responsible.
The border state of Arauca has been a hotbed for criminal activity and Colombian rebel groups like the National Liberation Army.
