Small blaze in Polson Park contained by firefighters

VERNON – The Vernon Fire Department is applauding members of the public for quickly reporting a small blaze in Polson Park this afternoon.

While relatively small, Deputy Vernon Fire Chief Lawrie Skolrood says it was a good thing they were alerted to it immediately by a passerby.

Someone noticed the fire in a wooded area near the train tracks at Polson Park around 3 p.m., July 20.

It appears the fire originated from an abandoned campfire located underneath a tarp strung up in some trees, Skolrood says.

He says the quick call combined with recent wet weather helped prevent the fire from getting out of control.

Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control, but will continue to investigate, Skolrood says.
