Summerland man gets house arrest for trying to buy a cell phone with someone else’s ID

PENTICTON – A Summerland resident has been sentenced to six months of house arrest after attempting to buy a cell phone using someone else’s identification.

Jedd Hagreen Ladeur, 39, was handed the sentence today, July 25, by Judge Gale Sinclair in Penticton court for dealing with an identity document without lawful excuse after he attempted to purchase a $360 cell phone from London Drugs.

Crown Prosecutor Kurt Froehlich told court Ladeur attempted to buy the cell phone on Sept. 16, 2015 in a promotional deal — that would also have provided him with a $100 gift card — using identification that did not belong to him.

The London Drugs employee knew Ladeur was not the man in the identification presented to him and called the police.

Ladeur presented the credentials of Jesse Michaud, a Penticton man well known to police who is currently facing charges stemming from an incident last July where he is alleged to have brought a shotgun into Penticton court.

When police asked why he was using Michaud’s credentials, Ladeur said he found a wallet in the Penticton motel room of a friend he was helping move.

Court heard Ladeur cooperated in the police investigation of the incident.

Crown asked Judge Sinclair to consider a 90 day jail sentence and a year’s probation, citing Ladeur’s criminal record, which included two robbery convictions.

Defence lawyer Kathryn Lundman said her client suffers from an oxycontin addiction stemming from a 1989 motor vehicle collision which also resulted in Ladeur contracting cellulitis. He was undergoing methadone treatment to combat his oxycontin addiction.

Lundman asked the judge to consider a six month sentence of house arrest for her client, who is currently on social assistance in addition to working part time, or an intermittent jail term to be served on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Judge Sinclair agreed to Lundman’s first request and handied down the sentence of six months house arrest along with no-go condition at London Drugs in Penticton.
