Charges expected in crash that killed TRU athlete

Cops plan to recommend charges after a crash near Thompson Rivers University killed a WolfPack volleyball player and injured two others.

In a report to a Kamloops city council committee, RCMP said charges will be recommended.

Although the report doesn't specify the McGill Road collision, it lists three fatal collisions in the final three months of 2023. One involved a motorcycle and was deemed to be rider error, while another was weather-related and involved just one vehicle. The third fatal crash was the only one that involved multiple vehicles, pointing to the Nov. 29 fatality on McGill Road.

Detachment spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn did not immediately respond to a request for an update on the investigation.

Kamloops RCMP have said the case is still under investigation, but the report to council is the first suggestion from the detachment that there will be criminal charges.

Police didn't say whether the driver of the truck was arrested at the scene or whether it was a criminal investigation in the days and weeks after the crash.

It's been two months since 22-year-old Owyn McInnis was killed in a crash near the university where he studied and played volleyball. He and two teammates were stopped at a red light in a Volkswagen when a Dodge Ram struck their vehicle and multiple others on Nov. 29.
