Canadian star Alphonso Davies strains knee ligament in Bayern Munich win

MUNICH – Canadian star Alphonso Davies suffered a ligament strain in his left knee during Bayern’s Munich’s 3-1 Bundesliga win over visiting Borussia Moenchengladbach on Saturday.

“He twisted his knee,” Bayern head coach Thomas Tuchel told the post-match news conference.

A subsequent examination showed the ligament strain, the club said, adding the fullback faces “a spell on the sidelines.”

Davies was substituted in the 84th minute after making a sliding block to stop an attempted cross. He had used his trademark speed to catch Franck Honorat from behind.

The 23-year-old from Edmonton, who has won 44 caps for Canada, came off after receiving treatment on the pitch. He completed 92 per cent of his passes before having to leave.

Bayern visits Leverkusen next Saturday in a top-of-the-table clash.
