Kamloops bus driver fired after failing sobriety test while on duty

A Kamloops bus driver who failed a roadside sobriety test over the weekend has been fired.

B.C. Transit corporate spokesperson Meribeth Burton reported today that an investigation by the driver's employer, First Canada, lead to the decision.

"First Canada ULC and BC Transit are committed to the safety of our passengers, employees and the community at large," Burton said in a press release issued this morning.

A 90-day driving prohibition was handed to the driver on Saturday after failing a roadside check while on duty.

According to B.C. Transit, the vehicle near Juniper via the No. 16 route in Kamloops had no passengers inside. Burton said an employee called in suspicious behaviour of the driver to a supervisor who then escalated the situation to police.

RCMP met the driver and issued an Immediate Roadside Prohibition after the driver failed a roadside sobriety test.

Burton told InfoTel News yesterday that B.C. Transit and First Canada had never heard of an incident like this before.

Another Kamloops bus driver was recently fired following allegations of discrimination.
