Residents plucked from balconies as fire races through Surrey apartment

SURREY, B.C. – No one has been hurt, but numerous suites in a large apartment complex in Surrey, B.C., have been destroyed in an early morning blaze.

Flames broke out around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The most extensive damage appears to be on the top floor of a newer three or four storey building not far from the Gateway SkyTrain station (on King George Boulevard at 108 Street.)

Firefighters had to rescue a number of residents from balconies as the fast-moving fire engulfed several suites and broke through the roof.

Many other apartments have suffered serious smoke and water damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. (Global)
