MEXICO CITY – Mexico’s Public Safety Ministry says authorities have arrested around 70 armed individuals “linked to a criminal group” in the southern state of Guerrero.
The ministry said Saturday that the group was travelling in convoy from the community of La Union to allegedly confront another armed group for control of territory near the Pacific Coast port of Lázaro Cárdenas.
Officials say a mix of marines, soldiers, state police officers and National Guard agents were deployed to detain the convoy.
Armed groups fight for control of drug routes and extortion in the area, while some communities have also taken up arms in self-defence.
