Stuck piston led to crash of CF18 Hornet at Alberta air show practice
LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – A military investigation has concluded that a sticky piston probably caused the crash of a CF18 Hornet during an air show practice in southern Alberta.
The pilot was able to eject as the plane went down at the Lethbridge County Airport in July 2010.
But he was seriously injured because the aircraft was only 45 metres from the ground when he bailed.
The Royal Canadian Air Force says a number of factors contributed to the crash.
But a loss of engine thrust was probably due to the stuck piston.
The Air Force says it is improving its air show training program.
