KELOWNA – A fire in Knox Mountain Park this afternoon is a reminder the fire season is still not over, despite the relatively quiet year so far.

Platoon captain Steve Wallick said the Kelowna Fire Department got to the scene of the rank one grass fire around 3:20 p.m., Aug. 9, quite quickly to find lots of smoke and some flame.

The department responded with five units to the fire which was about 750 metres from the top of the mountain, right beside the access road.

With shifting winds on the top of the mountain, Wallick said the fire had the potential to take off, which is why he ordered everyone off the top of the mountain through the Magic Estates back entrance. No one was allowed past the fire

Wallick would not speculate about the cause of the fire, although its location beside the road would suggest something thrown or dropped from a vehicle.

“We’ve been through this every year when conditions are bit dry and the materials are volatile,” he said. “Hopefully we can get the message out through the media that fire season is not over.”
