Canada’s top court won’t hear appeal of former Mountie convicted of murder in Penticton
PENTICTON – The Supreme Court of Canada won't hear the appeal of a former police officer found guilty of murdering his common-law wife in Penticton.
Keith Wiens was sentenced to life in prison on July 25, 2013 for the second degree murder of Lynn Kalmring, 55, in the couple's Penticton home. He is required to serve at least 13 years before he is eligible for parole.
Canada's highest court dismissed Wiens' motion to introduce new evidence in the case. The justices don't give their reasons for not hearing an appeal.
The former Summerland RCMP officer testified during his trial he shot his wife in self defence but the jury didn't believe him and found him guilty of murder.
The B.C. Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal of his conviction in January 2016.
