Most actively traded companies on the TSX, TSX Venture Exchange markets

TORONTO – Some of the most active companies traded Wednesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (12,353.09 up 70.74 points):

Research In Motion Ltd. (TSX:RIM). Wireless technology. Up 72 cents, or 5.80 per cent, at $13.14 on 9,324,593 shares. The BlackBerry maker’s stock continued to rise, closing to its highest level since May. RIM released Tuesday the ‘gold’ build of its developer toolkit which contains all the final elements developers need to create apps from the coming BlackBerry 10 operating system.

Uranium One Inc. (TSX:UUU). Miner. Up a penny, or 0.55 per cent, at $1.84 on 6,856,245 shares. The metals and mining sector rose 0.90 per cent to 972.29 points.

Precision Drilling Corp. (TSX:PD). Oil and gas. Up six cents, or 0.75 per cent, at $8.11 on 6,410,520 shares. The company, which provides drilling services to the oil and gas industry, announced Monday that it will cut its capital spending for 2013 to $485 million while it expects its 2012 capital spending to be about $920 million. Precision will also start a dividend payment of five cents per share, payable on Dec. 28.

Viterra Inc. (TSX:VT). Grain handler. Down a penny, or 0.06 per cent, at $16.23 on 5,940,381 shares.

Yamana Gold Inc. (TSX:YRI). Miner. Up 26 cents, or 1.50 per cent, at $17.63 on 5,316,116 shares.

Progress Energy Resources Corp. (TSX:PRQ). Oil and gas explorer. Up a penny, or 0.05 per cent, at $21.98 on 4,871,417 shares. Malaysian state-owned energy firm Petronas completed its $6-billion takeover of Progress Energy Monday. The deal won Ottawa’s approval last week after having initially been rejected as not being of “net benefit” to Canada.

TSX Venture Exchange (1,184.94 up 1.01 points):

EastCoal Inc. (TSXV:ECX). Mine developer. Down 1.5 cents, or 6.98 per cent, at 20 cents on 9,360,300 shares.

Pinecrest Energy Inc. (TSXV:PRY). Oil and gas explorer. Down seven cents, or 4.22 per cent, at $1.59 on 6,731,220 shares.

Companies reporting major news:

Cenovus Energy Inc. (TSX:CVE). Oil. Down 59 cents, or 1.74 per cent, at $33.34 on 3,739,152 shares. The Calgary-based company expects to grow oil production by 14 per cent next year, mainly thanks to expansion at its Christina Lake oilsands project in northern Alberta.

Primaris Retail REIT (TSX:PMZ.UN). Real estate. Unchanged at $26.56 on 1,211,470 shares. The Toronto-based trust says a takeover offer valued at $4.4 billion by a consortium led by KingSett Capital undervalues Primaris and its development opportunities and acquisitions.

YM BioSciences Inc. (TSX:YM). Drug developer. Up $1.16, or 69.88 per cent, at $2.82 on 2,030,705 shares. California-based Gilead Sciences Inc. announced an agreement to buy the Canadian company for about US$510 million.
