Forces lieutenant-colonel assigned blame and fined $2,000 for sexual harassment

CFB VALCARTIER, Que. – A Canadian Forces lieutenant-colonel who pleaded guilty to two charges of sexual harassment has been assigned blame and fined $2,000.

The charges against Martin Bernier were related to incidents in October 2014 involving two female subordinates from CFB Valcartier, near Quebec City.

The Crown had been seeking a demotion.

Judge Louis-Vincent d’Auteuil said a blame was sufficient enough to illustrate the loss of faith in the lieutenant-colonel.

During his court-martial, Bernier pleaded guilty to the two charges and saw two charges of sexual assault dropped.

Bernier, who is currently based in Ottawa, said at his trial he had apologized the day after the incidents.

He is the former commander of the 2nd Canadian Division Training Centre at 2nd Canadian Division Support Base Valcartier.
