Carabins, Blues earn semifinal date in U Sports women’s hockey championship

SASKATOON – Jade Picard had a goal and two assists as the Montreal Carabins upset the UBC Thunderbirds 4-2 on Friday at the U Sports women’s hockey championship.

Joannie Garand, Picard and Laurie-Anne Ethier (empty-netter) scored third-period goals to lead seventh-seeded Montreal past No. 2 UBC. The two teams entered the final frame tied 1-1.

Garand and Mylene Lefebvre both had a goal and an assist for Montreal.

Cassidy Rhodes and Sophia Gaskell replied for UBC, who outshot the Carabins 26-22.

Later Friday, the sixth-ranked Toronto Varsity Blues knocked off the third-seeded University of New Brunswick Reds 2-1.

Sophie Grawbarger’s goal at 17:39 of the third period snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted Toronto to the upset victory.

Grawbarger also assisted on Ashley Delahey’s first-period goal.

Mackenzie Keenan scored for New Brunswick.

The Carabins will meet the Blues in Saturday’s semifinals.
