Canadian divers capture three World Cup medals in Berlin

BERLIN – Canada’s Rylan Wiens earned a silver medal in the men’s 10-metre platform event at a World Cup diving competition Saturday.

Wiens, 22, captured his first-ever individual World Cup medal.

“I came here to win a medal, and that’s exactly what I did,” he said. “I’m very excited!”

Wiens finished with 494.50 points. China’s Junjie Lian of China was first with 542.55 while Australian Cassiel Rousseau was third with 476.90 points.

“When I realized I had a chance to get on to the podium, I was really nervous,” Wiens said. “I stayed nervous until my final dive, where I was able to relax a bit when I saw the scoreboard.

“I stepped on to the platform and gave everything I had.”

Canadians Kate Miller and Caeli McKay were second in the women’s 10-metre synchronized event. It was their second silver of the season.

“It’s always great to win a medal but I think we’re both a bit disappointed in our performance,” said McKay. “It wasn’t as consistent or as precise as we would have liked.

“We still have a lot of work to do, but winning a medal is very motivating.”
