Writers Ta-Nehisi Coates, Hanya Yanagihara win $50,000 Kirkus Prize

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Ta-Nehisi Coates’ “Between the World and Me” and Hanya Yanagihara’s “A Little Life” are among the winners of the second annual Kirkus Prize, worth $50,000 to each of three recipients.

Coates letter to his son about race and racism received the nonfiction prize Thursday.

Yanagihara’s novel about the lives of four former college roommates was cited for fiction. Both works are bestsellers and finalists for the National Book Awards, with winners to be announced next month.

The Kirkus Prize for young people’s literature went to Pam Munoz Ryan for “Echo.” The awards are presented by the trade publication Kirkus Reviews.
