Similkameen residents asked to pay additional funds to keep Keremeos Library open

PENTICTON  – Two Similkameen rural areas will join the Village of Keremeos as part of a service area to provide additional funding for the Okanagan Regional Library branch in Keremeos.

Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen Board of Directors voted in favour of a new service area encompassing the two rural areas surrounding Keremeos as well as the village itself.

The Keremeos Library, a branch of the Okanagan Regional Library, faced a reduction in hours because of funding limitations.

At the Aug. 4 board meeting, directors voted in favour of separate bylaws for the two rural areas, but further deliberations resulted in a move to rescind those bylaws in favour of one encompassing all contributors.

West Bench Director Michael Brydon called the funding “two-tiered” asking if the creation of a library service area was a “one off” or to become the new reality.

Keremeos Mayor Manfred Bauer said a decision had to be made in order to fund service hours needed to keep the library open. He said a resolution has been put forward to the province, asking for a review of funding for rural libraries in a way similar to recent funding announced for rural schools.

The cost of the service to the average Similkameen homeowner with a residence worth $185,000 is estimated at $10 annually.

The service area bylaw will require public assent, which will be derived through the Alternate Approval Process.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
