Olaf strengthens to major hurricane far out in Pacific Ocean; poses no current threat to land
HONOLULU, Hawaii – Hurricane Olaf has strengthened to a major hurricane far out over the Pacific.
The National Weather Service says it has become a category 4 hurricane.
Meteorologist Bob Burke says it’s the 15th major weather event in the Central Pacific basin this season. That’s the highest number on record.
The storm’s maximum sustained winds Monday are 130 mph (215 kph). Additional strengthening is expected Monday night, with possible fluctuations in strength Tuesday.
The hurricane is centred about 1,280 miles (2,065 kilometres) east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii and is moving west at 12 mph (19 kph).
A turn toward the west-northwest is expected Tuesday, followed by a turn to the northwest on Wednesday.
Forecasters say the hurricane currently poses no threat to land. There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.
