VICTORIA – The B.C. official who governs lobbyists has slashed a fine imposed on a former Conservative member of Parliament and lobbyist who filed inaccurate information about himself.

Jay Hill was originally fined $2,500 after registering as a lobbyist even though no one had hired him for such work — an action that violated the government’s rules covering lobbyists.

Hill appealed the ruling, and while the Registrar of Lobbyists, Elizabeth Denham, confirmed the finding against Hill, she’s reduced the fine to $250.

Denham says there’s no evidence Hill gained any economic benefit from his actions and no economic harm was caused to anyone else.

Hill was the Conservative house leader and MP for Prince George-Peace River for 17 years before leaving politics in October 2010.
