RCMP officer killed in B.C. crash was speeding without police lights

SURREY, B.C. – The RCMP says a Mountie who was killed in a crash last month near Vancouver was speeding as he tried to locate a stolen truck and did not have his emergency lights on at the time.

The police force is providing its first update into the death of 28-year-old Const. Adrian Oliver since shortly after the Nov. 13 crash, when Oliver’s unmarked police cruiser collided with a transport truck in Surrey.

The RCMP have issued a news release that says GPS and video evidence indicates Oliver was attempting to locate a stolen pick-up truck and, moments before the crash, he was travelling above the posted speed limit.

The news release says the cruiser’s emergency lights and siren were not activated at the time.

Police have already said Oliver, who started his first posting with the RCMP in June, 2009, was nearing the end of a 12-hour shift at the time of the crash.

The RCMP say its criminal collision unit continues to investigate the crash with external oversight by the Vancouver Police Department.
