Enderby man brandishes machete against father

ENDERBY – A young man attacked his father with a machete over the weekend, sending both of them to hospital.

Just before 9 p.m. Sunday, rural officers were called to Tamarack Road in Enderby for a report of a 20-year-old man assaulting his 48-year-old father with a machete.

RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk says the father received lacerations to his shoulder, arm and hand as a result of the assault and was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. His son was arrested for assault with a weapon.

"The investigation determined that the young man suffers from some mental health issues," Molendyk said.

The young man lives at home with his family, and RCMP are not aware of previous offenses of this nature.

"It's a very tragic situation here involving family members," Molendyk said.

He was taken to Vernon Jubilee Hospital and committed under the Mental Health Act.  He is expected to be evaluated by a psychologist Monday morning.

"After the assessment, if the psychologist deems he is fit enough for trial there is a possibility charges will be laid," Molendyk said.
