House Oversight Committee launches probe of Nassar scandal

WASHINGTON – A third committee in Congress is launching an investigation into the Larry Nassar scandal.

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee announced the probe Thursday. It sent letters to the U.S. Olympic Committee, USA Gymnastics, Michigan State University, the Twistars gymnastics club in Michigan and the Korolyi Ranch.

The probe is the third inquiry opened in Congress, joining the House Energy and Commerce Committee and a subcommittee of the Senate’s commerce committee. Those two panels want information by Friday.

Democratic Rep. Carolyn Maloney of New York says Congress must investigate the “systemic failure” that enabled Nassar to sexually abuse girls for so long.

Nassar worked at Michigan State University and was team doctor for female Olympic gymnasts. He’s serving decades in prison for sexual assault and possession of child pornography.
