WHL Roundup: Wong, Babenko lead Hurricanes over Royals in shootout

VICTORIA – Tyler Wong and Egor Babenko scored in a shootout to lift the Lethbridge Hurricanes to a 4-3 win over the Victoria Royals on Tuesday in Western Hockey League action.

Ryley Lindgren and Brayden Burke had a goal and an assist apiece for Lethbridge (8-2-0), and Wong rounded out the offence with a power-play goal in the first period.

Dante Hannoun struck twice for the Royals (8-5-0). Vladimir Bobylev had the other goal.

Hurricanes goaltender Jayden Sittler started in net, giving up three goals on 18 shots through two periods. Stuart Skinner stopped all 18 shots he faced in the third period and overtime, and made two saves in the shootout.

Victoria’s Coleman Vollrath stopped 22 shots through 65 minutes.

Lethbridge was 2 for 3 on the power play while the Royals failed to score on three chances with the man advantage.

THUNDERBIRDS 7 WHEAT KINGS 2

KENT, Wash. — Keegan Kolesar scored a hat trick and Mathew Barzal chipped in with five assists as the Thunderbirds overpowered Brandon.

Ethan Bear had a goal and an assist for Seattle (7-2-1). Kaden Elder, Ryan Gropp and Jamal Watson also scored.

Rihards Bukarts and Reid Duke scored for the Wheat Kings (8-2-2).
