Gushue, McEwen, Homan undefeated at Masters Grand Slam of Curling

TRURO, N.S. – Brad Gushue of St. John’s, N.L., and Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen improved to 2-0 in round-robin play at the Masters Grand Slam of Curling tournament on Wednesday.

Gushue defeated Glenn Howard (1-1) of Penetanguishene, Ont., 6-3 in Draw 5 after winning his first match of the tournament on Tuesday.

McEwen beat Shawn Adams (0-2) of Halifax, 7-4 in Wednesday’s evening draw, hours after dispatching Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock (0-1) 7-1 in the afternoon.

On the women’s side, Ottawa’s Rachel Homan won both her matches.

Homan topped Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni (1-1) 5-3 Wednesday evening after downing Tracy Fleury (0-1) of Sudbury, Ont., 7-2 earlier in the day.

Elsewhere, Reid Carruthers (1-1) of Winnipeg scored a single in an extra end to edge Brad Jacobs (1-1) of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., 7-6. Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones (1-0) doubled up Sherry Middaugh (1-1) of Coldwater, Ont., 10-5, and Edmonton’s Val Sweeting (1-0) toppled Winnipeg’s Kerri Einarson (1-1) 7-4.
